The Social Justice Forum is taking place February 2nd, 2012 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Law Courts Inn

This event is open to all UBC law students, and is a great opportunity to mingle with public interest organizations and social justice practitioners!

Panelists are Robyn Gervais (Counsel in the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry), Doug King (Staff Lawyer at PIVOT), Lobat Sandrehasmi, (Immigration & Refugee Lawyer), and Karen Slaughter (Acting Director, Prisoners Legal Services).

The Indigenous Law Students Association is partnering with Canadian Lawyers Abroad to present a must-attent event!

On Tuesday, November 22nd at 12:30 pm in Allard Hall, room 122, Professor Darlene Johnston will provide a special lecture titled “Crossing Borders: Indian Reserves as Canada’s Third World?”

We hope you attend the lecture so as to further your knowledge on a subject that is rarely approached at law school.

A light sushi lunch will be provided.

THIRTEENTH ANNUAL ROBERT H. GUILE, Q.C., MEMORIAL DEBATE, 2011-2012

The Robert H. Guile, Q.C. Memorial Debate emphasizes humour and wit in the law.

TRYOUTS: November 18, 2011

Tryouts will be held on Friday, November 18, 2011, either in Allard Hall or in the Grad Ballroom, Graduate Student Centre, depending on the availability of a liquor licence for Allard Hall. Tryouts will start at 4:15 pm. Students who wish to try out should send me an email (edinger@law.ubc.ca ). At the tryouts, each student will have 5 minutes to speak, either for or against, to the resolution set out below.

RESOLVED THAT JUDGES SHOULD BE ELECTED

It will not be necessary to have a partner for the tryouts or to indicate, when you sign up, whether you intend to speak in favour of or against the resolution.

There will be a panel of 5 to 7 judges consisting of some combination of faculty members, representatives of Bull Housser and Tupper, (the sponsors of the accompanying social event), friends and colleagues of Robert Guile, and former Guile Debaters. The panel will select the 4 finalists, the students who, in its opinion, display the greatest wit and humour. Those 4 students will compete (as partners) in the final round of the Debate.

FINAL: January 27, 2012

The final round of the Robert H. Guile, Q.C., Memorial Debate will take place in Allard Hall on January 27, 2012. The winners of the Debate will each receive a prize of $500. The runners up will each receive a prize of $250.

Yes it’s that time of year again…the glorious month of Movember is upon us!

Movember is a fundraising campaign to support Prostate Cancer Canada and change men’s health worldwide through Prostate Cancer research and awareness. During the month of November (henceforth “Movember”), your friends and colleagues will be growing moustaches and accepting donations for their progress (or lack thereof).

What this means for you:
This is your formal invitation to start raising money for a good cause.

People who did it last year:
You’re an expert. You just need to reactivate your old account, and join the team “UBC Law Students’ Society.”

Guys who didn’t:
Give it a shot this year! Everyone looks cooler with a moustache. That is a fact.

Ladies who didn’t:
We need your help! A physical inability to grow a moustache does not mean that you cannot raise money. All types of marker and/or finger moustaches are encouraged.
The Rules:

1) Shave clean on October 31

2) Grow a moustache for the next month in whatever style you please

3) Raise Money!

Its that simple.

There will be weekly prizes for best moustache in various categories, as well as a a host of other events during the month of November. We are competing with the Med School this year to see who can raise the most money. So lets represent the law school with pride. Get ready for an interesting month!
